Exhibition Coming up in 2020

As the membership secretary for Women’s Caucus for Art/Michigan Chapter I am excited to be helping with a new exhibition. In 2020, the Chapter is sponsoring an art show to celebrate the Suffrage Centennial. The Chapter is also looking for sponsors and partners for additional outreach and support. The exhibit will be displayed at Swords and Plowshares Peace Center and Gallery in Detroit–keep your eyes peeled here for updates!

The 19th Amendment: Women’s Voices Then and Now

In a time when women’s rights are being denigrated, women’s health is being sidelined, women’s bodies are being threatened, and women’s pay is still not equal to men’s, it’s clarifying to remember the strength of the suffrage movement that established women’s right to vote. Let us honor the centennial of the 19th Amendment in 2020 with art!  Passed by Congress June 4, 1919, and ratified on August 18, 1920, the 19th amendment granted women the right to vote. Years of struggle, sacrifice, and determination of suffragists pushed the 19thAmendment to ratification. Celebrate and commemorate this pivotal moment in women’s rights because the vote of women is more important now than ever.

Using visual art, acknowledge the battle for women’s rights inspired by individuals, events, or ideas.  Significant figures such as Lucretia Mott, Alice Paul, Lucy Burns, Susan B. Anthony, Ida B. Wells, Carrie Chapman Catt, and/or Aloysius Larch-Miller may spur creative expression.  Photographs of marches and events leading up to voting rights becoming realized are also important. The Amendment text, available at www.archives.gov, may provide inspiration. Depict your message through paint, print, text, metal, clay, mixed media, fiber, paper, photo, video, new media or performance.  Two-dimensional, three-dimensional and computer based works accepted. Framed works must be gallery ready to hang—no saw tooth hangers.
